Ismael Saibari’s early strike powered Morocco to a crucial 1-0 victory over Scotland in Group C of the FIFA World Cup 2026, boosting the Atlas Lions’ hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Saibari needed just 70 seconds to make the difference at Boston Stadium, latching onto a perfectly weighted pass from Brahim Diaz before bursting through the Scottish defence and firing past goalkeeper Angus Gunn. The goal stands as the fastest of the tournament so far and Morocco’s quickest-ever strike at a FIFA World Cup.

The victory moved Morocco onto four points and temporarily to the top of Group C, while also showcasing the side’s dominance in possession. According to Opta, the Atlas Lions completed 601 passes against Scotland, the highest tally recorded by an African team in a World Cup match since records began in 1966.

Despite conceding early, Scotland gradually settled into the contest and pushed for a response after the break. Morocco, however, remained dangerous on the counterattack and defended resolutely to secure a valuable three points.

The Atlas Lions nearly doubled their advantage midway through the second half when Saibari’s deflected effort rattled the crossbar following a slick move initiated by Bilal El Khannouss. Moments later, El Khannouss himself came close, but Gunn reacted sharply to deny him from a near-post corner delivered by Achraf Hakimi.

Scotland mounted sustained pressure in the closing stages, with John McGinn, Ben Doak and Scott McTominay driving the attack in search of an equaliser. Morocco’s defence, however, stood firm to preserve the narrow lead and claim a significant victory.

Saibari’s goal also carried historic significance. His strike after one minute and 10 seconds eclipsed the previous fastest goal of the tournament, scored by Czechia’s Michal Sadilek after five minutes and seven seconds against South Africa.

The PSV Eindhoven midfielder became only the second African player to score in each of his first two FIFA World Cup appearances, joining Egypt’s Mohamed Salah in an exclusive club. The goal is also the fastest Morocco have ever scored at a World Cup and the second-fastest by an African nation in tournament history.

Only Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan has scored quicker for an African side at the World Cup, having found the net against Czechia at the 2006 edition.

While Saibari now holds the record for the fastest goal of FIFA World Cup 2026, the all-time World Cup mark remains untouched. Türkiye’s Hakan Şükür continues to hold that distinction after scoring just 11 seconds into a match against South Korea at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco will now look to build on the result as they continue their push for a place in the Round of 32, while Scotland face mounting pressure heading into their final group-stage fixture.
